    One of the ruling modes of capital accumulation and political consolidation in New Haven, CT is the biotechnology industry. This document provides insights into some of the ways that this city has been reshaped by local, national, and international political and economic forces in the image of this industry. It serves as an overview of the way that power is organized and wielded in the city.

  • Weapons Manufacturing in Connecticut Teach-In

    Weapons Manufacturing in Connecticut Teach-In

    In collaboration with other local groups, we have organized teach-ins in New Haven and Hartford about the weapons manufacturing industry in Connecticut and one of its biggest players: Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX (Raytheon) that manufactures jet engines.

    The teach-in presented the history of the local industry, the environmental and human impact of the parts made here, the workforce development and ties to education and nonprofits of these companies, and the economics of this industry in our state. Small and large group discussions followed. The materials for this can be found on this page.   • Mold Pamphlet

    Mold Pamphlet

    This pamphlet was developed to support tenant canvassing and education on mold contamination in rental housing. In addition to providing important facts about identifying mold, cleaning mold, and the threats mold contamination poses to health, this pamphlet stresses the role of landlord neglect in causing and exacerbating mold issues in rental housing. We also highlight the role of tenant unions in forcing landlords to act on these issues.

    This pamphlet was developed in partnership with Baltimore Renters United and the Ujima People’s Progress Party. The template available for download here includes a blank flap (originally filled with information on Baltimore and Maryland legislation on mold) and a space for an email and QR code for more information.

    Lead Pamphlet

    This pamphlet was developed to support tenant canvassing and education on lead contamination in rental housing. In addition to providing facts about sources of lead contamination in housing and the negative health effects of lead exposure, this pamphlet stresses the role of landlord neglect and insufficient government action to protect tenants. We highlight how both governments and landlords continue to neglect the threat of lead exposure in rental housing,  and the role of unions in keeping tenants safe.

    This pamphlet was developed in partnership with the Cargill Tenants Union. The template available for download here includes a flap highlighting the successful struggle of the Cargill Tenants Union in forcing the landlord to perform lead abatement. This template may be used as is or edited.

    Career Fair Counterrecruitment Pamphlet

    This pamphlet was developed in collaboration with the SftP Boston chapter to use as a tool for counter-recruitment at engineering and tech career fairs. The pamphlet aims to describe to career fair attendees how the many different sectors that often attend these recruitment events are all “guided by what is most profitable: war” and prompt attendees to think critically about these industries and commit to organizing against the science-military-industrial complex.

    Modules: The Social Production of Scientific Knowledge

    This was the Political Education Working Group’s first course. It was aimed at practicing scientists interested in developing an analysis of the way that their work – in the laboratories, conferences, and desk – were all embedded within systems of power and capital. It starts with an investigation of the deceivingly simple question: what is science? Several modules later, we examine parts of the political economy and structure of the biotechnology industry. We hope that you will take this course up and shape it to meet the particular demands and interests of your local organization.
